A Massachusetts congressman announced the tragic passing of his young daughter on Thursday.
Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., shared in a statement that his daughter, Molly, passed away while on vacation to Europe.
‘Molly radiated pure joy. She lit up every room with her beaming smile—full of laughter, endless warmth, and a sharp wit that could disarm you in an instant,’ the statement from the McGovern family began.
‘She was unbelievably funny, fiercely loyal, and wise beyond her years. Molly had a rare gift: She made everyone feel special, because she genuinely believed everyone was special.’
The 22-year-old was suffering from a rare form of cancer, the lawmaker shared.
‘Even as she faced a rare cancer diagnosis, she did so with relentless courage, optimism, and tenacity—refusing to let her illness slow her down.’
‘She had just finished a semester abroad in Australia. She passed away unexpectedly in Italy while visiting a good friend and his family.’

The statement was signed on behalf of the congressman, his wife Lisa McGovern and their son Patrick McGovern.
The lawmaker’s colleagues immediately began pouring out their support for the Massachusetts family.
‘My heart breaks for Jim, Lisa, Patrick, and the entire McGovern family,’ the second most powerful House Democrat, Katherine Clark, another Bay State lawmaker, wrote in a statement.
‘I can imagine no greater pain as a parent than losing a child. Molly was an incredible source of light and love in their lives and cherished in our congressional family.’
Molly was studying political science and international affairs at Northeastern University, according to her LinkedIn page.
In 2023 for Father’s Day Molly wrote her father a glowing tribute on his campaign website.
‘Remarkably, considering a tough work schedule, Dad was always there for my brother Patrick and me growing up,’ Molly wrote. ‘We’d take long walks around the neighborhood, talking about everything and nothing.’

‘We’d spend hours reading chapter books together before bed, frequently earning ‘just one more page,” the note continued. ‘Years after bedtime routines and bedtime reading, Patrick and I can still always count on our Dad to be there for us.’
‘I’m proud to be his daughter and of the work he’s doing,’ she wrote.
