- Mark ‘Spudd’ Carroll is from footy’s old school
- Walsh, 22, has won over fans of all ages
He was a famed hard man in his footy playing days – but it seems Mark ‘Spudd’ Carroll is softening after he declared he has no problem with NRL superstar Reece Walsh wearing nail polish.
Carroll, 57, stressed the Broncos fullback can be a showman – he just needs to back up his swagger on the field.
‘It’s OK to look flash, but you’ve got to be able to do the hard work as well,’ Carroll said on SEN Radio.
‘I don’t mind seeing the finger polish or the make-up because these guys can play.
‘He [Walsh] is the most beautiful specimen I’ve seen on the footy field. The way he glides across the field, he reminds me of a greyhound.’
Carroll – who won a premiership with the Manly Sea Eagles in 1996 – has clearly changed his tune when it comes to Walsh, who recently signed a four-year, $5million contract extension with Brisbane.
In June this year, Carroll stated if he was playing State of Origin for NSW he would target Walsh on the field because of his ‘flowing hair and painted fingernails.’
‘As an old dinosaur, seeing someone so beautiful as Walsh, I’d love to get my hands on him,’ Carroll said ahead of the series opener in Sydney.

‘His beautiful blue eyes would be spinning.’
Walsh also garnered support in April on a footy forum online, with one supporter mocking the cult hero wearing pink headgear and painting his nails.
The caption read: ‘Reece Walsh of painted fingernails fame … only in QLD’ accompanied by a face-palm emoji.
‘Fragile masculinity lol. It’s just nail polish,’ one person replied.
‘Could be because he has a young daughter? Play on if your little one wants your nails painted,’ said another.
Walsh, 22, has previously opened up about the role his young daughter Leila plays in his life.
‘She has been awesome for me. She calms me down,’ he said.
‘Not everything is about footy. When I am in the [Broncos] facility I am the footy player. ‘When I step out and see my little one, I am Dad.
‘It [fatherhood] is pretty awesome. I am still so young but I feel if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be in this position. She is pretty awesome. I get emotional about it.’
