The couple, who have been married since 2009, will be soon be celebrating their 16th wedding anniversary on March 21.
Willis, 69, withdrew from Hollywood in 2022 amid his battle with the brain condition, aphasia, which causes the patient’s language abilities to deteriorate.
Then, in 2023, his family announced that his illness had ‘progressed’ and he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.
‘As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research,’ the family said in an Instagram statement at the time. ‘Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately.’
They continued: ‘We know in our hearts that – if he could today – he would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families.’
FTD occurs when nerve cells are damaged in the frontal and temporal lobes, which is associated with changes in personality, behavior, language or movement, according to the Mayo Clinic.
While FTD is not curable, some symptoms might be treatable due to significant strides in the past two decades.
Patients who are living with the condition are typically treated with speech therapy and taught ways to communicate non-verbally.
