‘I just left the city of LA. It holds some not so great memories for me, and I’m young and never lived anywhere else, and thought, “Why not?”‘
After her hit series Modern Family wrapped in spring 2020, Ariel and her boyfriend Luke Benward packed up and moved out of the city.
Ariel moved to Nashville, Tennessee with her longtime love.

Adding: ‘If you’re no longer on a network show that shoots there, you don’t really have to be there, and if I get a network show, I can easily go back.’
Ariel’s childhood was also traumatic, with the star describing it as ‘a really deep, painful, sore, sore part part for me that’s so much deeper and bigger than I’ve ever felt ready to talk about.’
The star, who has undergone therapy, has previously accused her mother Chrisoula Workman of abuse.
She also dealt with intense scrutiny from the public, specifically on her appearance – which also ‘damaged’ her ‘self-esteem.’
Ariel said she grew up on camera, which led to criticism of her looks.
On her negativity, ‘it was just everywhere.’
‘It was every headline I ready about myself, like, grown people writing articles about me saying how I looked terrible or pregnant or like a fat s**t. I mean, I was 14. It totally damaged my self-esteem,’ Ariel said.
Adding: ‘I understood what I was like to be hated. No matter what I was going through, I was a target. It made it very difficult to look at myself in the mirror and go, “I love this version of me.”‘
She began her acting career at age four – and landed the role of Alex Dunphy on Modern Family when she was 11 years old.
At 14, she was removed from her home with mom Chrisoula by Department of Child and Family Protective Services placed in the care of her older sister Shanelle Gray.
Ariel has accused her mom Chrisoula of abuse, which she has denied.
‘I went on to have a great rest of teenage years thanks to being under her custody,’ Ariel said.

At age 17 she was legally emancipated and declared an adult.

Ariel is also starting a podcast and creating a cooking show – in addition to acting and producing.
The actress also advocates for rescue dogs, and also works with the organization Safe From Online Sex Abuse.
Ariel starred as Alex in Modern Family from 2009 until 2020.
