It’s time toothy White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood braced herself for a reality check.
The British actress has become the patron saint of the offended after a Saturday Night Live (SNL) skit mocked her overbite.
Aimee, just grin and bear it!
The SNL sketch in question – called White Potus – was a parody of the black comedy HBO smash hit.
Wood’s character – an astrology-loving yoga teacher named Chelsea – was played by a prosthetically toothsome Sarah Sherman, who looked like a brunette Bugs Bunny.
That was the joke. Aimee Lou Wood had buck teeth.

Seems harmless. But she had a meltdown over it.
‘It’s mean and unfunny,’ she bleated. ‘Yes, take the p**s for sure — that’s what the show is about. But there must be a cleverer, more nuanced and less cheap way?’
Like what? Having her chomp on a carrot and ask, ‘What’s Up Doc?’
Was it really that crass a departure from SNL’s usual sloppy satire?
If anything, the fact that it was funny at all was a rare return to form for a show whose ratings recently tanked.
During the 2024 election cycle, SNL bigwig Lorne Michaels and his lefty writers repeatedly failed to read the room, treating bumbling Joe Biden and cackling Kamala Harris with a reverence devoid of humor.
That said Aimee’s teeth are non-partisan fair game. But Hollywood empaths are appalled.
Yes, there’s been plenty of frothing indignation from celebs quick to jump on the victim bandwagon with their pious platitudes.
‘I hate this so much,’ blasted self-anointed feminist icon and (very occasional) actress Jameela Jamil on Instagram. ‘It’s the least interesting or memorable thing about this brilliant actor. Our next Olivia Coleman. Hilarious, deep, vulnerable, and relentlessly loveable.’
Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon’s production company, Hello Sunshine, waded into the saga with this online message.
‘She invested seven months of mental and physical work into (her White Lotus performance) – so let’s celebrate her incredible talent AND leave space for Aimee to speak her truth beyond the roles she plays on screen.’

Amid wider hysteria of bullying and misogyny, Wood claims to have had an apology from the show – but according to SNL insiders that didn’t happen. Sherman sent Woods a bunch of flowers but, sources tell the Daily Mail, show bosses outright refused to say ‘sorry’ on the grounds that the whole fuss was ‘ridiculous’.
They’re right. But trouble is, from self-pitying Instagram posts to being pictured blubbing on the streets of London two days after the skit aired, the actress – who claims she is not thin-skinned – seems in no mood to let the matter rest.
And why would she? As Oscar Wilde said, ‘There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.’
This is especially true for a self-absorbed B-list leading lady buoyed by a tiresomely predictable squad of virtue signaling cheerleaders.
And if it’s truth we’re speaking, here’s one: a gappy smile was never going to go unnoticed stateside.
Americans have long derided the Brits’ ‘bad’ teeth. Our stained, crooked chew sets, immortalized by Austin Powers, are an affront to their ramrod straight, seamlessly gleaming Hollywood veneers.
So, surprise, surprise, it’s a talking point. But it’s one that has played to Wood’s advantage.
From her break-out role in the Netflix comedy drama Sex Education, in which she played one of the hit show’s main characters, Aimee Gibbs, she’s become the go-to girl for parts that demand kooky, endearing and a little quirky with a bikini bod and good looks.
It’s relatability that’s won a firm fangirling fanbase and level of attention that has no doubt exceeded what she would have got had she been just another Botoxed, identikit stunner.
Yes, it’s laudable she hasn’t felt the pressure to conform to the prevailing aesthetic but why would she? It’s hardly held her back.
Her buck-toothed battle against the odds is a neat narrative propelling her career and celebrity. It’s also the reason why, for someone who supposedly wants everyone else to change the record, she NEVER does herself.
Speaking to Stylist magazine in 2020 she shared that when auditioning for Sex Education she read three times for a lesser character simply because that role was scripted to wear braces: ‘I just thought, it’s a Netflix show, I’m not going to get on there with my teeth.’
No, not little old me.

London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts trained, Bafta-winning star of HBO’s biggest show can’t resist playing the self-deprecating, insecurity card, all of which jars with the overconfidence she tends to display.
‘HBO really had to fight for me which made me feel insecure,’ she humblebragged to GQ magazine. ‘Someone told me how much Mike (White, the show creator) had fought for me. They said, “It had to be you, no matter what HBO said”.
‘It was honestly from the nicest place, but my little head goes, “HBO didn’t want me. And I know why HBO didn’t want me, it’s because I’m ugly”.’
Oh, spare us the faux imposter syndrome please. Far from some sidelined character actor, the reality is Woods is cast as much for her good looks as any other young leading women.
Why else would she playing the half-his-age arm candy of a wealthy older man in White Lotus or be rumored to be set to play model Patti Boyd in a forthcoming Beatles biopic?
Yes, that’s the woman whose legendary beauty sparked a bitter tug of love between George Harrison and Eric Clapton and inspired two of the most famous love songs ever written – ‘Something’ and ‘Wonderful Tonight’.
Let’s face it, Wood’s teething troubles are tedious. You signed up for this Aimee, and you’re making a mint out of putting your best tooth forward, so it’s time to stop wallowing and grow a thicker skin. And if you can’t do that – get some braces.
