A British skier has died after hurtling out of control on a Swiss Alpine piste and crashing into a nearby river.
The 54-year-old skier, who has not been publicly named, had been on an authorised run from the 6,800-foot-high Kleine Scheidegg pass toward Brandegg when he suddenly veered off the piste.
It is understood he lost control and crashed off the marked slope before falling into the Rychenbach Stream on April 11.
The skier was airlifted to hospital in the capital Bern after fellow skiers pulled him from the water near the village of Grindelwald and called the emergency services.
Police said that he died in hospital from multiple injuries the following day.
The river was made famous as the final showdown between Sherlock Holmes and his arch enemy Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Fall.
Police are investigating the death.

It comes after a British skier was found dead at the bottom of a cliff in the French Alps after reportedly falling from a height while returning from an après ski party in Avoriaz in February.
The 23-year-old, who was not publicly named, was found in the popular resort above the town of Morzine, France.
It is believed that he had been skiing with friends before attending a party in Avoriaz, and then became lost when trying to ski down the mountain alone.
Police believe he became lost on the difficult slopes and took off his skis before the incident.
He was evacuated by helicopter before being declared dead and identified by family, authorities said at the time.
