An American who lives in the UK has taken to TikTok to share her surprise about some key differences between the two countries.
TikToker ‘@melissasmanual’ moved to London from Florida and explains that a few things have left her shocked.
In one video, Melissa says one of the ‘biggest differences’ she’s noticed is to do with petrol stations.
The TikToker reveals: ‘In the UK, you have to pump your gas and then pay in an actual gas station.’
She explains that in the USA, drivers just ‘put your card in and then pump gas so you don’t have to go in and pay for it.’
Melissa adds: ‘I can’t imagine what would happen in the US if you could actually pump your gas and then have to pay afterwards.
‘People would just be filling up tanks and just driving off. That’s why it doesn’t happen over there.’
One commenter ‘Maxwell Moore’ says: ‘That’s the sign of a honest society, an actual basic difference.’

‘Rev Steph Wells’ comments: ‘We are honest, so we pay, anyway your vehicle registration is recorded when you arrive at the petrol station, so pay or the police will come knocking.’
In another video, Melissa says that British people ‘rarely’ have an ‘extreme reaction’ to ‘extreme events’.
Melissa explains that ‘every time’ there is a ‘huge event’ where ‘something out of the ordinary happens’ that people from ‘other countries would have an extreme reaction to’ British people will react to the news with a much less dramatic response.
The TikToker says that British people might say ‘that’s quite unfortunate’ with a ‘very passive expression’.
She adds: ‘What I came to find out after living here is that you will very rarely get an extreme reaction from an extreme event.’
But she reveals that there is one way you will get ‘an extreme reaction from a British person’.
The TikToker says that British people do tend to have extreme reactions ‘if their football team either wins or loses’.
And alcohol culture is another key difference the TikToker has noticed between the USA and the UK.

In a third video, Melissa says: ‘Drinking in England is a whole different level. These people can drink. They can drink all day. Morning, afternoon, night. At the airport, at the pub.’
The Tiktoker explains that she always thought British people were ‘very quiet’, before she knew any.
But she says: ‘That’s not the case. They’re actually loud. Funny. Witty.’
Melissa adds that pub culture is just ‘the best time’ as ‘everybody gathers at the pubs.’
A commenter ‘Bacchus’ adds: ‘It’s odd that we have a reputation for reserve. It’s more that we just try to be professional when sober but then go completely feral when the pubs open.’
‘Natman’ comments: ‘If it’s sunny, it means go to the pub. It is known!’
