A cruise passenger has taken to Reddit to share their annoyance at ‘inconsiderate a******s’ who make a key buffet etiquette mistake.
Kicking off their rant on the forum, ‘Dazzling-Leader7476’ complains: ‘Why do people pile up their plates at the buffet and end up leaving it untouched?
‘I’ve seen it many times. People fill their plates to maximum capacity and eat just a few bites and leave the rest. What is the reason that they feel they must be inconsiderate a******s and waste so much food?’
The annoyed passenger then complains that people wasting food at the buffet is ‘one of the reasons’ that cruise prices have ‘been going up so much’.
The contentious buffet issue left other cruise passengers divided.
‘Moe_Bisquits’ agrees, saying: ‘I too am amazed by how much food people waste on cruise ships. Half the passengers have terrible cleanliness and don’t know how to act in public.’
The cruise fan even suggests that ships ‘should ditch the buffet’ altogether and only serve restaurant meals.
‘RobertaMiguel1953’ goes as far as to describe passengers who waste buffet food as ‘disgusting pigs’, adding that the behaviour ‘makes them sick’.

Meanwhile, Reddit user ‘Kanjikai’ blames ‘all-you-can-eat’ policies for the food waste. They say: ‘Some people feel the words “all-you-can-eat” gives them carte blanche to do anything they want with the food.
‘From filling their plates and wasting food in the buffet to taking ungodly amounts of food out the buffet and doing who knows what with it in their cabins.’
And another passenger claims that people are overloading their plates just so they can post a picture of the food.
‘Abqkjh’ says: ‘I think a lot of people are ordering food in order to take pictures of it or video it, but they don’t intend to eat it.’
But not everyone was so upset by the food waste.
‘ReasonResponsibility’ claims that the reason people waste food on cruises is ‘because it looks good but tastes awful’.
Another user agrees, saying: ‘I hate wasting food. But if it does not taste good, I’m not going to eat it. Unfortunately last few cruises, I left the buffet multiple times feeling unsatisfied.’
‘Talktojvc’ even admits to ‘leaving’ food that ‘tastes awful’. They claim that ‘cruise buffets aren’t what they were 20 years ago’.

And another passenger says that new cruise guests might just find the buffet ‘overwhelming’.
They explain: ‘I think cruise newbies often don’t know how much they can eat and the brain takes a bit to process that it’s free and always available.
‘And seeing all the food is overwhelming and feels sparkly and amazing. They feel like they have to try everything and maximize the “worth” of the buffet by piling on.’
Lingering at the buffet could also get you a bad name among cruise fanatics.
Mike Graham, a cruise expert, recently told MailOnline Travel that one of the worst things holidaymakers can do is ‘be the last one to leave’ at the buffet.
He said: ‘Whether it’s at the buffet, dining room or group activities, lingering after an event ends can hold up the crew’s efforts to clean and prepare for the next round.’
