Footy legend Darren Lockyer reveals wild act with a monkey at his team’s Bali Mad Monday celebrations

NRL legend Darren Lockyer has recalled a wild Mad Monday involving a beer-drinking, cigarette-smoking monkey he previously enjoyed with his Brisbane teammates in Bali.

It followed the Broncos winning the 2000 Grand Final against the Roosters – and celebrations were in full swing.

Lockyer set the scene via NRL on Nine.

‘I went down the lane way and told the guys I would catch up with them at the bar,’ he said.

‘I spotted a guy with a monkey and thought to myself ‘this could be a bit of fun.’

‘So I asked the bloke could I borrow his monkey for a little while.

In September last year, the Lockyer’s sold their Brisbane home for around $6.5million

‘I had $20 Australian on me…..which is a significant amount of money (in Bali) and we agreed I could have the monkey for an hour.’

Moments later, Lockyer found himself with his new friend on his shoulder as he headed to the bar – and teammates were in stitches upon his arrival.

They were soon collectively stunned as the monkey enjoyed a beer – and once his owner returned, the primate mammal was spotted puffing on a cigarette.

Teammate Lote Tuqiri couldn’t believe his eyes – and lauded Lockyer’s sense of humour.

‘I think he got it off a street performer,’ the cross-code star previously told the Sydney Morning Herald.

‘Who knows what it could have been riddled with, all sorts of germs. 

‘But there he (Lockyer) was, feeding it, eating peanuts with it.’

Lockyer was a one-club man across his decorated NRL career, turning out for the Broncos from 1995 to 2011.

In that time he won four premierships, chalked up 38 Origin appearances for Queensland and played a remarkable 59 Tests for Australia.

He then turned his attention to the media, and has been employed by Channel Nine since 2012 – despite a damaged larynx, which results in Lockyer’s husky voice.
