A recall involving snack food giant Frito-Lay has been upgraded over the risk that one their most popular chips could cause a fatal allergic reaction.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a limited number of 13-ounce bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips, including the nacho cheese flavor, did not list the milk they contain as an ingredient.
The recall was issued last month, but the FDA has now elevated it to a Class I, meaning this situation presents a ‘reasonable probability’ that eating this product could cause serious health problems or death.
The bags were sold in 13 states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
To know if you have a bag that’s been recalled, the FDA said to look for two key signs: a ‘Guaranteed Fresh’ date of ’20 MAY 2025′ and very specific manufacturing codes.
Those codes are 471106504 and 18 13:XX, where XX is any number between 30 and 55. Three other codes affected include 471106505 and 85 13:XX, 471106506 and 85 13:XX, and 471106507 and 85 13:XX.
Health officials added that these chips would have been on store shelves starting on March 7.
No allergic reactions have been reported at this point, but anyone with an allergy to milk is urged to throw these bags away immediately if they discover one.

Frito-Lay has recalled roughly 1,300 bags of their Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips because of a potentially fatal milk contamination

Milk allergies are one of the most common food allergies among children, and an allergic reaction can lead to nausea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing
Despite the widespread distribution of this brand of Tostitos, the FDA noted that fewer than 1,300 bags are believed to be contaminated with undisclosed milk.
No other Frito-Lay products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs have been recalled at this time.
A milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies among children.
Cow’s milk is the typical trigger, but milk from sheep, goats, buffalo, and other mammals can also set off an allergic reaction.
According to the Mayo Clinic, those with this allergy who consume milk can experience anaphylaxis – a severe and life-threatening reaction causing a skin rash, nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and shock.
For those who may not know if they’re experiencing a milk allergy reaction, some of the milder signs and symptoms include wheezing, hives, and digestive problems.
Anaphylaxis requires immediate treatment with an epinephrine (adrenaline) shot, like an EpiPen.
Patients should then head straight for the emergency room, the Mayo Clinic recommended.

Frito-Lay has 16 varieties of Tostitos on their website that are advertised as having no milk products in them, including the one being recalled
As of January 8, Frito-Lay listed several varieties of their Tostitos brand products among the items the company does not manufacture using milk.
In total, 16 varieties of Tostitos made that list, including Cantina Traditional Tortilla Chips.
A recent study in the Italian Journal of Pediatrics discovered that although peanuts and tree nuts are still a frequent culprit in childhood food allergy deaths, milk is becoming an increasingly notable trigger for fatal reactions.
From 1998 to 2018, a sample of 152 food-induced anaphylaxis deaths in the UK revealed that cow’s milk was responsible for 17 of 66 deaths (26%) among school-age children, making it the most common single cause in this age group.
From 2010 to 2023, eight of the nine fatal food anaphylaxis cases among children under 18 were linked to milk exposure in Italy.
