A savvy diner has sparked debate online after discovering a cheap and delicious breakfast hack: eating at a hospital cafeteria.
Sharing their experience on Reddit, the poster revealed they stumbled upon the unexpected bargain while waiting for their wife to undergo surgery.
‘The hospital cafeteria had these big bacon breakfast burritos for $3. It was loaded with eggs and was delicious,’ he wrote.
‘I walked by later in the day and the lunch smelled so good. It got me thinking – could I just start eating there every once in a while?’
While most people wouldn’t consider a hospital as a dining hotspot, the revelation has many questioning: Can you just walk into a hospital for a cheap meal? Or could you get in trouble for it?
According to Reddit users – including hospital workers and frequent visitors – the answer is yes.
‘As long as you’re paying and not causing a disturbance in some way, nobody is going to care,’ one person assured.
Another shared that they lived across the street from a hospital and made regular visits to the cafeteria.

‘I’d go to eat, then if I was really bored, I’d watch TV in an empty waiting room. No one ever questioned me.’
A former tech worker from America said they specifically timed their visits to Phoenix Children’s Hospital around mealtime because of the food quality.
‘It’s more like a high-end mall food court, with at least some healthier options. They had Asian, Middle Eastern, American and a few other cuisines. Way better than most places nearby.’
Even museum workers have caught on to the trick.
‘I worked at a museum with no restaurants or cafes nearby, but there was a hospital down the road. They had an award-winning cafeteria, and we ate there constantly.’
Hospital cafeteria managers don’t seem to mind, either.
One cafeteria manager revealed that staff don’t question why someone is in the hospital – they just aim to provide a stress-free space where people can enjoy a meal.
‘The goal of the cafeteria is to be a place where people can take their mind off the stress for a moment,’ they wrote.
‘I don’t turn away people who come in looking for a bite to eat. Even if they don’t have the money, we can usually get them a full meal if they are a visitor.’
Another Redditor, who had been a long-term patient, hospital worker, and visitor, said security rarely intervenes.
‘Nobody’s ever questioned me being in the cafeteria, except once when I was studying for finals. I had been there for four hours, and a security guard just asked if I was visiting someone. I said yes, and he told me he hoped they were doing better. That was it.’
While some might find it strange, others argue that hospital cafeterias offer a cheap, no-frills meal option in a world where the cost of dining out keeps rising.
‘Hospital food isn’t what it used to be,’ one commenter wrote.
‘Some of these places are serving better meals than restaurants – and for a fraction of the price.’
For those looking to stretch their dollar, this unconventional hack might just be worth a try.
