A highly unusual pizza topping combination has revolted some customers after the ‘culinary abomination’ was shared online.
Bubba Pizza, with locations mostly in Melbourne, is offering a pizza topped with ‘smoked leg ham with chunks of fresh orange and mozzarella’.
Essentially it is the classic Hawaiian with orange instead of pineapple, but that one change was enough to horrify a number of critics.
‘So, I’m pro pineapple on pizza. [I] find the sweetness a great add. I get people are texture people,’ one wrote online.
‘I also like orange. Orange can never compliment pizza. I’m out.’
Another simply wrote: ‘Straight to jail.’
‘With this one simple trick, pineapple-on-pizza supporters and haters have been united,’ another joked.
‘I’d try a slice, but I’m not willing to pay money to try it,’ a fourth offered.

An advertisement for a summer pizza special attracted hundreds of comments on Reddit
‘That’s a culinary abomination,’ another said.
But others were more open to the idea.
‘There are plenty of salads that feature fruit. Is this so far away from a prosciutto and orange salad?’ one asked.
‘People make orange glazed ham all the time. It’s not uncommon to find it in South American pork braises and European confit variations. Also used in a lot of Chinese, Korean and Thai marinades and stir fries,’ another reasoned.
‘There would be a tonne I don’t know about as well, just a few examples of its compatibility when pairing with meats.
‘I’m not justifying this pizza, but it wouldn’t be bad – just different. Salty, fatty pork undeniably goes well with sweet fruits, fresh and cooked.’
Another suggested orange would ‘work with roast duck’ on a pizza.
Many feared what Italian purists would feel about the new pizza.

Some defended the topping saying the citrus would offer be a tasteful addition to the ham on the pizza
‘Send this to the Italians,’ one viewer wrote, prompting another to ask: ‘You want to start a war?’.
‘I’m (going to) tell my Nonna. Watch this spread like wildfire,’ another said.
Several cooks have shared their recipes for fruity pizzas online.
One suggested green apples and sharp cheeses make for a good contrast on pizzas.
Another even suggested pesto and banana also combine to create a tasty topping.
