TreeHouse Foods, a company based in Illinois, has issued an urgent recall of over 12,000 cartons of chicken broth sold under Walmart’s Great Value range. The recall, originally initiated in December 2024, has now been upgraded by the FDA to a Class II recall due to concerns over bacterial contamination. Customers are urged to check their products to ensure safety.
The FDA explained that the issue stems from possible damage to the paper cartons, which could promote the growth of harmful bacteria. A Walmart spokesperson emphasized, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted product from the select, impacted stores. “
The affected broth is distributed across 242 stores in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas. The specific product carries a UPC code of ‘007874206684’ and has an expiration date of March 2025.
The FDA defines a Class II recall as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” No reports of illness have been confirmed so far, but customers are encouraged to dispose of the product immediately.
Walmart has taken steps to ensure customer safety by removing the recalled products from its shelves and investigating the issue alongside TreeHouse Foods. The company reassured customers, stating, “We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
This recall is not the first for TreeHouse Foods. In October 2024, the company recalled various gluten-free organic waffles due to possible listeria contamination. The bacterial infection, caused by listeria monocytogenes, can lead to severe health issues, especially for older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Listeria infections can cause symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues, which may progress to more severe conditions like confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Pregnant women face additional risks, including miscarriages and stillbirths, emphasizing the importance of early detection and recall measures.
Routine testing at TreeHouse Foods’ manufacturing facility led to the discovery of the contamination issue. The CDC estimates that approximately 1,600 Americans are infected with listeria each year, resulting in around 260 deaths. Proper recall measures are crucial in preventing these outcomes.
Customers who purchased the affected broth are advised to dispose of the product and can request a refund from Walmart. The company has outlined clear steps for customers to follow and remains committed to their safety.
